nH hotels have had our vigorous recommendation until our last stay in Cologne Germany, December 7-13, 2025. We will no longer risk using them.
On arrival they claimed they had upgraded our room, as regular customers who were there for a longer stay. If it was an upgrade, I hate to think of their "normal" room.
We carry our own nightlight, but the room power went off every few hours. Just pull your keycard out of the slot by the door and reinsert it, and the power comes back on. Luckily there was a streetlight outside our room so we could leave the drapes open for some light. Pop the card then our nightlight worked in the bathroom. (We reported the problem a couple times, but it continued.)
The TV remote control was in German, with no translation card as in most hotels. We have traveled enough that we figured out the controls. However, if you pushed channel guide, the TV and remote both froze (you could not even turn the TV off). The desk clerk pulled the TV away from the wall and temporarily pulled the plug to restart. Luckily, we watched how, since we had to do it repeatedly.
Since we could not use the channel guide on the TV, the desk clerk suggested we press channel up until we found what we wanted to watch. As I recall it was 64 clicks to reach the English language stations. We had to start over each time we used the TV (it didn't remember where we were).
On check-in, they announced that the room would be serviced every 4 days.
The food available in the lobby was managed by a third party. Okay, overpriced as expected, but the "German National Can Deposit" of 0.25 was charged as 0.40 with no refund on the "deposit." Just another irritation.
Occasionally nH includes a nice breakfast with the room, but it is pretty expensive as an option. This time, the café at the Chocolate Museum/Factory across the street had a great breakfast for 1/3 the cost. Another nH hotel in Vienna was across the street from McDonalds.
Having read this review, two friends have contacted us with sumilar recent experiences at nH hotels.
